Some human ancestors may have met their fate at the end of a beak and sharp talons, becoming bird food for prehistoric raptors, according to a study in the October issue of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

W. Scott McGraw, an anthropologist at Ohio State University, along with collaborators there and at the University of Liverpool in England, drew that conclusion after examining more than 600 bones of modern monkeys found beneath the nests of African crowned eagles in the rain forest in Ivory Coast. Ohio State University (OSU): Columbus - A new study suggests that prehistoric birds of prey made meals out of some of our earliest human ancestors.

Researchers believed this child, called the Taung child (Australopithecus africanus), had been killed by a predatory cat. But McGraw said that puncture marks on the monkey skulls he examined closely resemble those found on the skull of the Taung child...
